Elohim

אֱלֹהִים

Elohim: The Creator God

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

— Genesis 1:1 (ESV)

Reflection

The very first word used for God in all of Scripture is Elohim — a plural noun used with a singular verb. This grammatical tension is not an accident; it is a theological fingerprint. From the opening syllable of the Bible, the text is signaling that the God who creates is not a simple, solitary deity but a being of profound complexity and fullness. The plural form hints at what the New Testament will later make explicit: the Trinity — Father, Son, and Spirit — was present and active at creation.

Elohim appears over 2,500 times in the Hebrew Bible, making it the most frequently used name for God in the Old Testament. It derives from the root El, meaning "strength" or "power," and in its plural form it carries the sense of the fullness of divine power — not many gods, but one God in the fullness of His being.

What does it mean that the God who made the universe is Elohim? It means that creation is not an accident, not a cosmic coincidence, and not the product of blind forces. Every galaxy, every cell, every breath you draw was spoken into existence by a God of infinite power and intention. The same Elohim who said "Let there be light" and light blazed into being is the God who speaks over your life, your circumstances, and your future.

The name Elohim also appears in moments of judgment and covenant. When God establishes His covenant with Noah, He is called Elohim. When He speaks to Abraham, He is Elohim. The name carries authority — the authority of the one who made all things and therefore has the right to govern all things. To know God as Elohim is to know that you live in His world, under His authority, sustained by His power.

Today's Application

Spend five minutes today simply looking at something in creation — the sky, a tree, a flower, your own hand — and let it remind you that Elohim made it. Speak His name aloud: 'Elohim.' Let the weight of that name settle over you. You are not alone in a random universe. You are held in the hands of the Creator God.
